Course Description

Being a parish or town councillor is an important, complex and unique role. Whether newly elected or highly experienced, councillors often face similar challenges and opportunities in supporting their communities and working effectively within their councils.

The aim of these informal sessions is to provide an opportunity for councillors to get together, discuss experiences, ask questions and share learning with peers from across the county.

The session will be facilitated by an experienced local councillor who understands the realities of the role and the issues faced by councils of all sizes. Facilitators will help guide discussion, encourage the exchange of ideas and signpost useful sources of support and information.

There is no set agenda for the network. Conversations will be guided by what councillors wish to discuss and what would most help them in their role and in supporting their council. Topics might include working with the community, understanding roles and responsibilities, effective meetings, relationships with the clerk and chair, or any current issues councillors are dealing with.

These sessions are designed to be friendly, supportive and practical – a chance to learn from one another in an informal environment.

The Bribery Act 2010 is among the strictest legislation internationally on bribery. We are going to explore the ways in which all of us have leadership roles in our councils, whether we're aware of it or not. We will consider a range of different leadership styles and explore when different leadership styles and approaches can be effective in different situations. We will explore the related concepts of active listening and giving effective feedback, which are two core skills required to be an effective leader. We will also consider the importance of effective teamwork how to get the most out of people you work and engage with across the council.
