Course Description

The Clerk is an important, complex and unique role so the aim of these informal sessions is to provide an opportunity for Clerks to get together and discuss experiences and share learning. The session will be facilitated by Clerk and LALC Chief Officer Debra Platt.

Debra is an experienced Clerk to a large Council for 27+ years (and still is). She has also worked in small and medium sized parishes; worked as a National Advisor for the Society of Local Council Clerks (SLCC) for 7 years; Chief Officer of LALC since 2022; a Certified CiLCA trainer; NALC Triage Officer on the Local Council Awards Scheme.

Being a parish or town councillor is an important, complex and unique role. Whether newly elected or highly experienced, councillors often face similar challenges and opportunities in supporting their communities and working effectively within their councils.

The aim of these informal sessions is to provide an opportunity for councillors to get together, discuss experiences, ask questions and share learning with peers from across the county.

The session will be facilitated by an experienced local councillor who understands the realities of the role and the issues faced by councils of all sizes. Facilitators will help guide discussion, encourage the exchange of ideas and signpost useful sources of support and information.

There is no set agenda for the network. Conversations will be guided by what councillors wish to discuss and what would most help them in their role and in supporting their council. Topics might include working with the community, understanding roles and responsibilities, effective meetings, relationships with the clerk and chair, or any current issues councillors are dealing with.

Course Description

The Bribery Act 2010 is among the strictest legislation internationally on bribery. It is now possible to charge organisations if it is found they failed to prevent bribery, and to charge individuals who are found guilty of bribing or being bribed. Knowing exactly what is and isn't accepted under the Act enables employees to act within the confines of the law. This course explains the Bribery Act, including the four offences covered by it, and uses case studies to give learners more insight. This course can form an integral part of an organisation's defence against the crime of failing to prevent bribery. This course helps you understand the Bribery Act and shows you how the provisions of this UK legislation function. When you finish the course, you will be asked to demonstrate your understanding of some of the key points by completing a short assessment. This module is designed to provide Clerks, Council Officers and Councillors with an introduction to the skills needed to be effective leaders in the different roles we have, and the different situations we face, in our local councils. We are going to explore the ways in which all of us have leadership roles in our councils, whether we're aware of it or not. We will consider a range of different leadership styles and explore when different leadership styles and approaches can be effective in different situations. We will explore the related concepts of active listening and giving effective feedback, which are two core skills required to be an effective leader. We will also consider the importance of effective teamwork how to get the most out of people you work and engage with across the council.
